GAGARIN The Artists in their Own Words

Gargarin is an international periodical publishing special and unpublished writings by artists. The editorial layout is based on John Baldessari’s quote ‘Talking about art simply is not art. Talk can be art, but then it is not talking about art’.

The Museum of Contemporary Art S.M.A.K. in Ghent, Belgium recently organised an exhibition addressing the complete GAGARIN oeuvre of artist’s texts with a selection of works by the same artists from the museum collection and special loans. The different editions of GAGARIN are cut up and hung at eye-level in a continuos line through several rooms of the museum.

Normally I walk rather randomly through exhibitions, trying to defy a set order. In the exhibition GAGARIN The Artists in their Own Words I, however, followed the reading path mapped out by the magazine along the wall as it was winding around the corners and exhibition spaces.
I thoroughly enjoyed this exhibition where the ink of the word was treated just as much as a material of creation as any other medium.
